MG Motor India strengthens electric, autonomous vehicle R&D through through IIT Delhi

MG Motor India has joined forces with IIT Delhi’s Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART) for research in the field of electric and autonomous vehicles.

The partnership, which has been forged through Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), IIT Delhi aims at furthering MG’s focus on CASE mobility (Connected – Autonomous – Shared – Electric); through enabling supporting research for deployment of electric and autonomous vehicles in the urban landscape in India.

MG had worked in the past with IIT Delhi on a yearlong project to boost in-car child safety seat project through geofencing.

The automaker had also conducted a grand innovation challenge Hackathons in partnership with IIT Delhi amongst students and startups to make automobiles and transportation services safer and greener.

MG, which introduced the first internet electric SUV – the MG ZS EV and the first autonomous Level 1 premium SUV – Gloster, aims to use the research for developing its future autonomous vehicles.

The company has also donated its ZS EV vehicle to IIT Delhi, which is a center for innovation globally and ranks among the top institutes for technology across the world, for conducting the research.

The study will also include Connected Mobility for areas including Route Planning and Navigation, Seamless and Natural Human Interaction, Obstacle Detection, and AI for Inferring and Decision-making.

Testing platform

Prof V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi said, “IIT Delhi has always been at the forefront of innovation and technology. Our association with MG Motor India gives us a perfect platform to test autonomous vehicles.”

“We believe that the future of e-mobility has a great scope for autonomous and connected vehicles,” he added.

Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART) actively participates to conduct high end research and development in the areas of battery-operated electric vehicles, storage and alternate energy sources, hybrid electric vehicles, autonomous and connected vehicles.

FITT was established at IIT Delhi to foster, promote and sustain commercialisation of research results at the Institute.
