Indian electric passenger vehicle sales throttle at faster mode in May 2026

The sharp fuel-price hikes of the past month have brought day-to-day running costs into sharp focus for buyers — and increasingly, the low cost of ownership is tilting that everyday economic decision firmly towards electric.

The electric passenger vehicle sales in India grew by a whopping 81.20% to 26,682 units in May 2026 as compared to 14,725 units sold in the same month a year ago.

Not only the passenger vehicle segment, the EV sales covering all vehicle registered remarkable figures in May 2026.

Commenting on EV Retail data for May’26, FADA President Mr C S Vigneshwar said,” May’26 is a landmark month for India’s mobility transition — and a meaningful step towards the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s clear call for the nation to embrace electric mobility. For the first time ever, EVs crossed 11% of all vehicles retailed, with the industry registering 2,71,682 EVs, up 45% YoY.

According to the latest data released by Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA),in the passenger vehicle EV segment,  Tata Motors leads the pack with 10,340 units followed by Mahindra at 6,210 vehicles and JSW MG Motor at 4,984 units.

Maruti Suzuki is the fourth place with 1,591 units while Vinfast is chasing the fifth place with 1,238 units.

Other players like BYD India, Hyundai, BMW, Kia and Mercedes-Benz are still in three digit figures.
